AMS Student Group
Advanced Medical Science (AMS)
Each year since 2001, the Melbourne School of Population Health (SPH) has welcomed between 20-40 AMS students. These students explore particular areas of interest in a yearlong research/coursework program as part of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree (MBBS) at the University of Melbourne.
Eight AMS units are on offer across the Melbourne School of Population Health in areas including health policy, medical ethics, women's health, international mental health, epidemiology and sexual health.
The School offers the opportunity to tailor a program to your needs, whilst drawing upon the expertise and the broad scope of interest areas available.

Student Experiences
"My expectations have been surpassed. Already my AMS year has stretched my mind and challenged the way I think about things in ways I could not have anticipated. I'm looking forward to the rest of the year, and can only hope that it does not go too quickly!"
"A fantastic opportunity to study in a way that the rest of the course doesn't allow. It's a glimpse into 'real' student life and a chance to explore your interests."
"Apart from the fact that spending a year or so doing something boring like being a lab rat was seriously lacking in appeal, I chose AMS at the Melbourne School of Population Health to get a chance to look at some of the issues surrounding medical practice in Australia today."
"I got to check out Melbourne Uni outside the walls of the medical faculty. I have always wanted to try my hand at picking my own subjects for a change, and so far, I have really enjoyed this - it has been great just to do something different."
"Interesting discussions were a highlight."
"My mind has been opened to creative ideas which I am unable to experience in the medical course."
"It was great to have so much contact with academic staff."
"I have done things that I never thought I could possibly achieve."
"The way I look at the world changed. I will be a better person for it, and will be a better doctor as well."
"I learned that the field of medicine is not a neat little box as some people think."
"I was given the opportunity to develop my sense of identity."
